Alternators and generators

Alternator and generator rebuilds

Alternator rebuilds for every type of vehicle and generator rebuilds for dependable power output, performance tested on the bench before they go home.

What we do

Every alternator and generator starts on the test bench, so we know what failed before we take it apart. We rebuild it with high-grade parts and test it again for output before it leaves the shop.

Rare and hard-to-find units are welcome: if the part you need is no longer made, our machine shop can often restore the original.

Attention installers

Before you install an alternator

An alternator is not a battery charger. It is designed to keep a fully charged battery charged, not to recharge a flat one. Check these first:

  1. Battery: check for a faulty or weak battery, and make sure it is held tight in its holder.
  2. Fully charged: the battery should read 12.6 V and hold a load test. Below 12.4 V, recharge it before starting the engine.
  3. Old battery: a battery 30 months old or older should be professionally load tested, or replaced, before the engine is started.
  4. Correct battery: make sure it is the right battery for the vehicle, with the cold cranking amps it needs.
  5. Battery cables: check connections, corrosion and wear. The voltage drop from end to end should not exceed half a volt.
  6. Belts and tensioners: check belts for cracks, polished wear and alignment, and tensioners for proper tension and binding.

Never remove a battery cable with the engine running to check the charging system: it damages the alternator and the vehicle’s computer. And don’t jump-start another vehicle while the battery is still connected to the electrical system. Skipping these checks can damage the alternator or starter and may void the warranty.

Why alternators fail

  • 67% a faulty or weak battery
  • 14% poor connections, fusible links, faulty battery cables and bad grounds
  • 9% belt wear or the tensioner
  • 6% jump-starting another vehicle

Rebuilt in a couple of days

5 out of 5 stars

We brought our alternator here for a rebuild. They gave their best to find the right parts, as it is a very rare domestic one and hard to find. You could tell they put in all the effort to help us out, and within 2 days it was ready to install again. Great customer service.

This shop was great. I had my alternator rebuilt in only a couple of days. I was not expecting the housing to be cleaned and painted, so when I got it back it looked super fresh. Price was very fair. Will be back in the future.
